"sallyjacobs is one of the best stumblers out there... it's like she has a superpower that gives her the ability to sleuth up the nerdiest stuff on the Web. I'm going to make a fairly definitive statement here, and say that anyone who doesn't have an Internet crush on sallyjacobs, has no heart whatsoever. Do you hear me, Internet? No heart!" --mrvader2u.

Hiya! I'm an archivist and all-around history geek who never met an antique photo (or a Czech beer) I didn't like. My Practical Archivist blog offers how-to advice about organizing and preserving your family treasures.

I'm also kinda obsessed with digital preservation and obsolete technology...especially when it involves music.

As an introverted entrepreneur I keep an eye out for good writing tips and internet marketing advice that isn't slimy.

How much is your data worth?

Technically, the data on your hard drive might be recoverable even after it crashes...but it's gonna cost ya over a thousand bucks. My advice? Spend a lot less $$ on a second backup drive, use it regularly and save not only your data, but also hundreds of dollars.

Having said that, click through to read about what $1,900 will buy. It involves these dudes:

From the page: "It's not surprising that the biggest buyer of American scrap metal is the world's biggest consumer/manufacturer, China...While it's nice to have a booming industry in Vermont, you can see that this one has its limitations.

Since we're not a manufacturing country anymore, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that we could easily run out of scrap metal if this keeps up. And even though America still needs metal for houses, cars and appliances, we're competing for our own scrap with countries that can pay much more."

Preserving Old Movies, At 40 Degrees, Archivists Fight To Save Classic Films By …

From the page: "The magical way in which a chilly, dry setting retards shrinking, fading or "nitric melt" inevitably raises concern about the long-term survival of other vulnerable pieces of the world's film heritage, from safety-based acetate stock adopted in the 1950s to television recordings to flimsy digital-video cassettes."

For this Peak Oil Cassandra (who also happens to be an archivist) it raises another Really. Big. Question: How long will archival institutions be able to afford that kind of energy usage? And don't say digital will save us. The average Data Center consumes as much energy as 25,000 households.

I really want one of these reusable sandwich wrappers that doubles as a placemat when you open it up.

Must! Learn! Sewing!

I mean, seriously. What could be easier? This is pinch-pot level here. And I'm not even going to mess with the icky vinyl, just cloth. Machine washable, amen.
